Considering various different income streams as an artist can mean more time to yerself, to work on yer' art. This also leads to less worrying about making next month's rent! As you may have already realised it can sometimes be a little tough to make money as an artist.
In order for you to take yer' creative endeavors further it's important to make sure you have ways of bringing in money.
The last thing anyone wants is to struggle to make ends meet. This means you are going to need to focus on different passive income streams. One of the wonderful things about the internet is that it provides so many opportunities for creative people that would be near impossible without it. If you're just starting out on your creative business or yer' looking to explore other options, there are plenty of ways to generate passive income for artists and keep much needed cash flow a priority for you while you focus on creating.
In this blog post, I'm going to explain what passive income is, why its essential, and ideas to create passive income and boost yer' income as soon as possible.
1. Print-On-Demand
Print-on-demand sites are where your artwork is printed on different products, ranging from things like phone cases, cushions, tote bags and wall art. A great way of seeing a steady revenue stream coming in, and, if your art is good enough, you can reap the benifits for a very long time!
With print-on-demand sites, the only thing you need to do is provide the artwork, which you’re already going to have. The company will handle literally everything else, including the marketing, selling, shipping, returns, refunds, and more. This is an excellent, stress-free way of being able to bring in some much-needed cash right now but comes with its own problems also. You can read more about that in another article I posted titled "What You Should Know Before Commiting to a Print on Demand Service"
.
2. Your Original Content
Being an artist you’re obviously going to produce pieces of artwork so naturally enough, one of the easiest ways for you to be able to find and generate passive income is to create and sell your artwork.
This can be done in many ways but you should take a look at selling things like original paintings or prints of your work. Another great route to look going down is fonts & graphics, illustrations, monetize your art blog or youtube channel.
One of the best ways to sell this type of content is to look at content purchasing sites, and there are a lot of them. Creative Market is one of the best places to be able to do this, as they are my number one go to for selling digital assets such as graphics, fonts, photos, and website themes.
3. Online Course
Creating and sellling an online course in areas of art that you specialize in. This has become extreemly popular in recent times and is one of the best ways you can create a passive income .
Record the videos/audio once, and every time the course sells you’re going to be making money from it. This is an excellent option, and one that can be a massive game-changer for you. Join a marketplace or you can host your own courses.
4. Art Licensing
Art Liscencing is where you grant a company a license to use your art for a particular purpose, typically to help sell things. And then you take a cut of the sales each time something with your artwork on it is sold.
If you can get art licensing deals with well-known brands and businesses, you would be on a mint and on the way to make a lot of money and all of it passively.
But, there are things you need to know before you commit to this, so do your research. I'll create a more in debt guide to thus in the future.
5. Subscription services
If you have a strong online presence or following, one of the best things you can do is to create subscription service that you can use to help you make money. There are endless ways that you can do this, like grant access to new videos, exclusive previews of work, behind the scenes, live streams etc.
Now, there are a lot of things to maintain and upkeep with this and it is important that you make sure you are focused on finding the best subscription service to use. Patreon is what I use as a subscription service and it is certainly one to check out.
6. Create an online shop
As an artist you need to own your own website (sorry Etsy #notsorry) and with that an online store. This is one of the best ways in regards to marketing yourself and your work. Selling your designs and artwork through your store is one of the best ways of generating income.
Digital downloads are super handy, as you don’t have to lift a finger for people to get their purchases. There are plenty of great ways of being able to do this, I use Square as they take care of my online transactions also but I have my doubts about them sometime..
7. Create a blog
Blogging was all the rage in 2006, and I'm bringing it back baby! The advantage of blogging is that it is easier than ever to monetize your blog as one of the best forms of passive income for artists. This is an great stream to consider but there are loads of things to take note here, so you need to make sure you get this right and blog in the best possible way.
Blogging about your art and using your blog as a platform to promote your artwork is one of the best ways of achieving this.Think long and hard about the way your blog is presented, and how this is going to help you when making money.
8. Gallery Representation
The first thought that pops into mind when someone thinks of an artist selling his work, and seeing your work available in galleries for everyone to see is something so many of us strive for, but it can be difficult to achieve.
Selling in a gallery is exciting and inspiring, they usually deal with everything so that you don’t have to, and this is what makes it perfect for passive income. The only drawback here is that the gallery will take a percentage of your sale, but it goes towards the general upkeep of the gallery, so you have to be okay with that! Start conversations online with gallery owners and art collectors. Makes yourself known in the local community. This is how I got my current gallery representation at LeHang Art
9. Private Commisions
Be commissioned directly by individuals or companies to create a creative work from scratch. As a painter or illustrator you can even get paid for street art and interior or exterior mural painting and design.
10. Affiliate marketing
One of the easiest, but tedious ways of making a bit of extra income is to get involved in affiliate marketing. This is where you use your platform to promote someone else’s business or product and they pay you for the trouble.
Now, this is something you can integrate and make a huge part of what you’ve already got. It is an excellent way to not only generate extra income, but also to develop existing relationships and network in the right way. This is going to help you significantly in the future as well, and will benefit you when it comes to marketing yourself.
These are all the most effective platforms you can use to earn passive income revenue as an artist and yield great results in this blizzard year of 2021.
Another great income stream to think about is Youtube! It's definitely worth taking the time to create video content as an artist. You can use your channel to achieve so much such as a path to create more interest in your work.
You can also look into a way to monetize your channel. However, it is not guaranteed to find instant success on Youtube. It's a tough one to start monetizing your YouTube channel, but once you get there, you'll be laughing! You can check out my channel and che and share the love by following this link here and view the different videos I create.
